Aurora, Colo. theater shooter James Holmes makes first court appearance for killing 12, wounding 58 at 'Dark Knight' screening

Now that Holmes is in custody and no longer covered in red paint and body armor, the dazed grad school dropout is likely to face a mountain of assault, attempted murder and murder charges for shooting 70 people during Friday’s ambush. He is due back in court July 30.

Angry relatives of the movie-theater massacre victims laid eyes on freaky suspect James Holmes for the first time Monday — and saw a red-haired devil who they hope will get the death penalty.

“He looks demonic,” David Sanchez said after Holmes’ bizarre, semicatatonic first court appearance in Colorado, where prosecutors are considering the ultimate punishment.

“He had demonic eyes. There’s something crazy about him. “He sat there so calm. So remorseless.
“It’s like he’s not even human.”

As Sanchez watched the brief hearing, his son-in-law, Caleb Medley, was clinging to life with a head wound and his pregnant daughter, who escaped the bloodbath, was in labor.

“She wanted me to be here,” he said.

Tom Teves and his wife Caren, parents of shooting victim Alex Teves, react as they are interviewed with Amanda Lindgren, Alex's girlfriend, after the preliminary hearing for Colorado shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes, at the Arapahoe County Courthouse in Centennial, Colorado July 23, 2012. Alex Teves was killed while protecting Lindgren during the shooting.

FACE OF TRAGEDY: THE COLORADO SHOOTING VICTIMS

Tom Teves’ son, Alex, was killed shielding his girlfriend from the hail of bullets unleashed during Friday’s screening of “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Watching Holmes blink, nod off and stare into space during the brief hearing, Teves couldn’t help but compare the 24-year-old suspect to his the 24-year-old son he lost.

In his first public appearance, James Holmes arrived in court with flaming orange hair looking dazed and vacant. Prosecutors said the movie theater gunman could face death penalty.

“I saw the coward in court today and Alex could have wiped the floor with him without breaking a sweat,” Teves said later.

He spoke of the cravenness of a gunman could snuff out the life of a defenseless child like Veronica Moser while toting four weapons and covered head to toe in body armor
“You shot a 6-year-old,” Teves said.

“Come on, give me a break. You’re dressed in full combat gear (and you) immediately surrender. Come on, pick on some guys who know how to use guns.”

Families members and friends of the victims of last Friday's movie theater mass shooting arrive at the Arapahoe County Courthouse for James Holmes' first court appearance July 23.

McKayla Hicks, who was shot in the jaw, said the room was electric with anger toward Holmes — “this freak lookin’ dude.”
